Roadracers (1994, traducida al castellano como El Indomable) se podría considerar una película de culto, B-Movie como las antiguas, las mejores. Dirigida por Robert Rodriguez, antes de que fuera conocido por otras obras maestras. Co-protagonizada, entre otros, por una joven Salma Hayek, aún con curvas de escándalo (meow!) y en la misma tesitura de anonimato que el Sr. Rodriguez, y un joven David Arquette en el papel de Dude.

Una banda sonora de las que ya quedan pocas: Link Wray, Hasil Adkins, Gene Vincent, Charlie Feathers, Glen Glenn, Ralph Nielsen, y los temas producidos para la película e interpretados por él mismo, de Johnny Reno.

Robert Rodriguez siempre ha hecho gala de su buen criterio musical, y siempre rescata algún tema de rock’n'roll/rockabilly oscuro para alguna de sus películas.

La historia de un joven que sólo quiere ser él mismo, a su modo, sin molestar a nadie, al cual su pasado persigue con una estrella de sheriff en el pecho.

Él es el protagonista de su propia vida, a quien todo le importa sólo hasta que le supone un obstáculo, entonces lo aparta de su vida. Amigo de sus amigos, hasta límites peligrosos. Amante de la música, sólo de la buena música. Disfruta de la velocidad y los ritmos frenéticos. Poco hablador, muy intenso, y con ganas de triunfar, pero poco hace por conseguirlo. Odia los compromisos.

Víctima de lo que le rodeaba y que no compartía. Época pre-hipster, se puede entender por qué esa generación acabó deambulando de carretera en carretera, de ciudad en ciudad: no place to go, but everywhere.

Ante una situación tal el cartero, mensajero o buzoneador de turno optará claramente por el botón situado en el extremo superior izquierdo, atendiendo a las pautas de lectura izquierda-derecha / arriba-abajo cuasi universal.

En su defecto, y ante la duda, optará por el extremo superior derecho.

Si por alguna razón alguno de estos dos puntos causara pánico al elemento impertinente, seguro que optará de forma no aleatoria por el extremo derecho e izquierdo, en ese órden. Respondería a los cánones del Bustrofedon.

Todo esto para evitar la completa aleatoriedad que provoca la retícula, pautada pero inquietante, y todo lo que no esté al alcance visual primario. Un perfecto ejemplo estéquedon.

Por tanto, y atendiendo a nuestras herencias de las lenguas latinas y griegas, procura evitar vivir en cualquier piso cuyo portero automático corresponda a cualquiera de las 4 esquinas del aparato emisor, en mayor grado si hablamos de las superiores.

Créeme, sé de lo que hablo, y ahorrarás muchas interrupciones molestas con objetivos equivocados.

Others used to call me Art Director, that really sucks. Sometimes I’m just a Graphic Designer, that is not really what I’m doing in my day by day. Definitely I’m not a coooool artist with superfluous designs. My work is so focused on user-centered design … doh! I get a little bit mixed-up.

User-Centered Graphic Designer should be a good term, but is too long to use on a business card. So I ask myself: Are we just User Interface Designer or not? Let’s check out what Wikipedia has to say:

Where traditional graphic design seeks to make the object or application physically attractive, the goal of user interface design is to make the user’s interaction as simple and efficient as possible, in terms of accomplishing user goals—what is often called user-centered design. Where good graphic/industrial design is bold and eye catching, good user interface design is to facilitate finishing the task at hand over drawing unnecessary attention to itself. Graphic design may be utilized to apply a theme or style to the interface without compromising its usability.

Wow! That’s really what I do everyday at work!

But Wait! You, HCI people, must be shouting out “No, Not really!”.
Traditionally User Interface Designer is a title used for HCI (Human-Computer Interaction) people but take a look again at what wikipedia has to say about Interaction Design:

Interaction Design (IxD) is the discipline of defining the behavior of products and systems that a user can interact with. The practice typically centers around complex technology systems such as software, mobile devices, and other electronic devices. However, it can also apply to other types of products and services, and even organizations themselves. Interaction design defines the behavior (the “interaction”) of an artifact or system in response to its users.

So, according to both definitions:

• Should we declare an User Interface Designer as an hybrid between traditional graphic design and interaction design?
• Should be User Interface Design an exclusive term for HCI people?

Finally, what the hell should I write in my business card?

But, what the hell is Git?

Git is a version control Swiss army knife. A reliable versatile multipurpose revision control tool whose extraordinary flexibility makes it tricky to learn, let alone master.

The above quote is from one of the best reference sites I’ve seen about Git: Git Magic.

And, how to use it?

At first you should be able to play with Git, so if you’re running OSX, try this simple installer: Git OSX Installer. Now you should be able to run git from your Terminal in OSX. Yeah! Let’s try!
The next sequence of commands will be used now and again, so don’t be lazy and memorize them ;). It’ll start Git repo and add all the files on you project folder. Last command line is for your first commit!
$ git init
$ git add .
$ git commit -m "My first backup"


Ok, now it’s time to create, add, modify, remove files from your great personal project. How to do it? It’s simple.
$ git add newfiles_or_newfolders
$ git rm oldfiles_or_oldfolders
$ git mv oldfile newfile

The first one from above commads will add new files or folders to your git local copy. Second one will remove them. And, at least, mv will rename the files.

If something fails just type:
$ git reset --hard
$ git commit -a -m "Another backup"


It’ll go back to where you were and save a new state.

Each time you have a fucking-great-power-version you can commit the changes to show it to your friends. So, just type:
$ git commit -a -m "A new fucking-great-power-version"


For now it’s enough if your are, like me, a newbie at Git. With that simple lines of code you should be able to play around. Just create an account at github where you can host some open-source projects for free and look for me overthere.

Ok, if you have used SVN before, you can say: what’s new with Git? Nothing at all. Next time I’ll wrote some lines about the power of Git, but I have to learn it before :)

Feel free to comment and show me your tricks & tips about git. Sure they’ll be helpful for me and, please, remember I’m just a designer who wrote some lines of code sometimes, explain it for a dummy :D

Antes de ponerte a colorear cosas, coge un lápiz y un buen puñado de papeles. Boceta sobre papel diferentes estructuras y plantea el equilibrio de contenidos. Define toda la cantidad de layouts posibles, no sea que luego te lleves sorpresas.

El uso de CMS modulares exige un nivel de definición extremo, pero todo debe ser medianamente flexible para ofrecer al layout un envejecimiento natural o, todo lo contrario, mantenerlo siempre joven y fresco.

Debemos entender un site como un elemento vivo, que debe crecer y decrecer de forma natural acorde a las necesidades temporales y condicionantes variopintos.

Las retículas están ahí, como guía, no seas un jodido extremista. Rómpela, juega con ella, distorsiónala, sólo una vez que tengas todo el contenido estructurado y ordenado.

Usa un programa que realmente sepa cómo gestionar retículas … vale, no hay ninguno, pero hay soluciones: Reticulator ™ (para Adobe Fireworks).

Trabaja codo con codo con la gente de maquetación y desarrollo. Ellos deben entender y comprender la retícula. Una retícula bien definida es un camino de baldosas amarillas de cara al layout y marcado HTML/CSS.

Ayuda a la gente HCI a definir una retícula. Ambos podréis exponer puntos interesantes de discusión consolidando una retícula sólida que no hará aguas en ningún momento del proceso.

La retícula no lo es todo. Para que una retícula esté bien aplicada necesitas unos conocimientos avanzados de uso de tipografías, comportamiento de masas y composición. La teoría de color para jerarquizar contenidos es algo que deberías traer de serie si te dedicas a la dura tarea del diseño.

Los diferentes formatos publicitarios te van a condicionar la retícula que vas a tener que utilizar ¡debe ser lo primero que pongas en tu site! Cuando resuelvas la publicidad es tiempo de empezar con los contenidos.

I was able to talk to professionals from Adaptive Path, Cooper, Inuse, … and a handful of interesting people with very good ideas and projects.

The trip has been spectacular, wonderful people, a charming city Malmö … I took a large number of photos to everything I saw: architecture and the use of typography in the local signage are pretty impressive.

Y lo que he visto hoy me ha gustado mucho:

No es más que esa tontería del tooltip al pulsar sobre el enlace de “older”. En lugar de lanzarte a una página donde Twitter se lamenta de su estrés (cosa habitual últimamente), te avisa con un tooltip para que te quedes donde estás sin fracasar en tu navegación.

En más amigable y, al contrario que una página de error, se reciben de mejor agrado los petes de la aplicación por estrés.

Debería plantearme una solución similar en mí mismo. En lugar de gritar o llorar en una esquina cuando ya sea demasiado tarde, podría pegarme un post-it en la frente con un “animal estresado” bien explicativo :D
